Becoming a candidate

General provisions governing qualifications for elected offices in Tennessee are set out in T.C.A. § 8-18-101.  <click here>

To begin the process of becoming a candidate in White County, you will pick up a nominating petition at our office and must obtain at least twenty-five (25) valid signatures of registered voters in the district in which you are running.

At the time you pick up your petition, our office staff will go over a checklist with you containing information and forms that you will need in order to run for office.

The nominating petition must be returned to our office no later than 12:00 noon on the date of the qualifying deadline for the election in which you are running.

Dates applying to when petitions can be picked up and the qualifying deadline for each election can be found on our election calendar.

Information regarding running for federal or state office can be found at https://sos.tn.gov/elections/candidate-information.
